Your Skin, Our Science

Your skin microbiome is a group of living organisms that make up your skin’s foundation. We’re using our expert understanding of the microbiome to revolutionize how we develop products to help improve the skin’s health and appearance.

About 20 years ago, talking about germs in general (let alone good germs) was something people tried hard to avoid. Germs existed and it was our job as humans to wipe them out as best we could. Yet, that’s when our partners at Cosmetic Research Laboratories began: investigating, researching, creating...getting to know the complex world of germs in-depth.

Today, there is immense interest in how the human microbiome interacts with and affects our health and wellness, as well as the related fields of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics. It seems there is something new we are discovering every day, shedding more light on this fascinating, invisible world of human microbes.

At the moment, we know much more about how prebiotics work in our gut than how they work on our skin. But we have discovered that using prebiotics topically (putting prebiotics directly on our skin) works very effectively for all types of concerns, from anti-aging, acne, redness, dryness, rosacea and dull skin. As a result, we have been focusing our research on this new perspective of using prebiotics in the treatment of many skin conditions.

So, unlike many cosmetic ingredients that kill good microbes along with the bad and disrupt the natural skin barrier, these next-generation personal care formulas carefully nurture friendly bacteria, helping them outcompete the harmful ones. This approach looks like the best “all round” solution in the treatment of many skin diseases such as acne which involve microbes and that is why we’re applying our expert understanding of the microbiome to revolutionize how we develop all Tomorrows Leaf products to help improve the skin’s health and appearance.

One of the skin conditions we have addressed with our revolutionary systems, acne.

Our acne systems, unlike traditional acne products (with ingredients such as benzyl peroxide, which have kill all approach to all the skins bacteria), our systems help to maintain the good bacteria on your skin!

Other brands offer solutions that may affect the skin’s protective bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermis—one of the main components of our facial microbiome. So, in effect, traditional acne products are destroying the bacteria which protect the skin on our faces.

Not only that...there is significant scientific data from the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, Maryland, which shows that benzyl peroxide users may be aging faster due to free radicals being formed during the manufacture of benzyl peroxide. Specifically, benzyl peroxide is usually prepared by treating hydrogen peroxide with benzyl chloride. Because the oxygen-oxygen bond in peroxides is weak, the benzyl peroxide readily undergoes hemolysis (symmetrical fusion), forming free radicals. In case you are not familiar with them, free radicals mutilate and damage cells.

And traditional acne products are not that effective for long. They are similar to headache pills which treat the symptoms and not the cause. Once the effect wears off, your headache could very well come back.

Our years of green technology
research has led us in a completely
different direction

a direction more in line with the natural way our skin works and using specific botanicals grown and researched at our UK facilities. The most recent discovery is our patent-pending Prebiotic Activ Technology™, a pure botanical base of blackcurrant fruit and pine needles that help stimulate (increase) the growth of protective bacteria and at the same time, inhibit (decrease) the unwanted acne causing bacteria. Overall, this approach balances the skin microflora to healthier levels. Since the cause of the skin condition is being treated, the results last longer. Clinical studies including human trials have shown this technology can effectively kill 99.99% of acne-causing bacteria in 30 seconds.

Academic partnerships are now advancing our scientific studies and knowledge into other areas of the human body affected by an imbalance of the skin microbiome.
